Cantiere d'autore is a photographic commission - destined to become part of the MAXXI architecture collection – that proposes an unconventional approach to the photographic documentation of the construction site and its constantly changing landscape. An entirely new landscape that will soon disappear to make way for the elegant volumes of the new museum. Cantiere d'autore invites famous photographers to document the various phases of the museum’s construction, based on their personal point of view of this open-air workshop, with the greatest possible freedom of choice and interpretation.
The objective is that of gathering a variety of interpretations and suggestions: the construction site as a theatre of experimentation with innovative techniques and materials; a place of work, where builders and technicians apply their energies, experiences and specific professionalism each day; a “public” space that is the focus of media attention and didactic activities.
It is precisely the temporary nature of the construction that forms the base of the photographic commission: the idea of “capturing” the conditions of an “absent place” in professional images, that, at the same time, also concretely capture its variability and mutability.
